Faith And Food: How Does Faith Impact Our Food Choices

As women who cherish our roles as keepers of the home, we know that caring for our families goes beyond just feeding their bodies—it’s about nourishing their bodies. Because how we nourish their bodies, impacts their minds and well-being, as well. How we nourish our bodies impacts our mental health, our energy levels, fertility, and just overall mood. As always, we are going to go back to The Bible and see what God has to say about our food choices and caring for our bodies.

1. Honoring Our Bodies as Temples - 1 Corinthians 6:19

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own."

This verse is a powerful reminder that our bodies are sacred, a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. Taking care of our physical health is more than just a wellness trend—it’s an act of worship. When we choose nourishing foods, embrace toxin-free living, and find time for rest and exercise, we’re honoring God with our bodies. Every small, intentional choice we make is a way of respecting the beautiful creation that we are, and it’s a gift we give back to God.

It’s also important for us as wives and mothers to really exemplify this type of relationship with food and our bodies so that it teaches and encourages those in our homes to do the same. My husband has always had a sweet tooth. That man cannot get enough pancakes, cookies, and ice cream. And although it’s okay to indulge in those things sparingly, it’s really not healthy for our bodies to consume such sweet and processed foods on a regular basis. One thing he has witnessed myself doing over the past several years is paying close attention to the ingredients in our foods. One morning, we ran out of maple syrup for our protein waffles so he ran to the store to get more. However, the “syrup” he brought home wasn’t actually syrup. Maple syrup wasn’t even an ingredient listed! It was full of chemicals to make it taste like syrup. He couldn’t believe it! Since then, I’ve noticed him paying more attention to ingredient lists. As women, we are to be keepers of the home and set good examples for those within and care for them as God would.

2. Keepers of the Home - Titus 2:4-5

"Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God."

As keepers of the home, we are entrusted with the sacred task of creating a space where our families can thrive. This responsibility goes beyond just keeping things clean and organized; it’s about fostering an environment where love, peace, and health flourish. By choosing non-toxic products, preparing wholesome meals, and being mindful of what we bring into our homes, we are living out this calling in a way that honors God and serves our families. This topic is so important that it simply cannot be covered in one blog post - check out the “Modern Homemaking” and “Health + Home” sections of the blog to really learn how you can care for your family’s health.

3. Stewardship Over Creation - Genesis 2:15

"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it."

God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden and entrusted him with the care of His creation. This stewardship extends to us today, not only in how we care for the earth but also in how we care for our own little “gardens”—our homes and our bodies. By choosing natural, toxin-free products, we are participating in this stewardship, taking care of the earth and ensuring that what we use is safe for our families and the world around us. It’s a beautiful cycle of care that honors God’s creation.

Let’s be real, do we really want our children’s skin (AKA: the largest organ of the body) to be soaking up toxic chemicals with lasting effects (ADHD, infertility, anxiety, depression.. need I go on?) every day as they bathe, wash their hands, etc? Stewarding our bodies and our homes begin with swapping out products that aren’t beneficial to our health and replacing them with clean(er) products that won’t affect their wellness.

4. Trusting in God’s Provision - Matthew 6:31-33

"So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

In our journey to live a holistic, toxin-free lifestyle, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the choices and information out there. But this scripture reminds us that God knows our needs and is faithful to provide. As we seek Him first, He will guide us in making the best choices for our families. Trust in His provision and rest in the knowledge that He is caring for you as you care for your home.

This also applies to financially affording products and foods that care for our bodies. Unfortunately, these products are more expensive. If you want healthier food, you’re going to have to pay for it. However, we can do two things when we are looking to eat healthier. One, we can try to find ways to save money (Thrive Market is one of my faves) and two, we can trust that God sees us trying to care for our family in this way and trust that He will help provide healthier options for us and a way to pay for them.

Encouragement for the Journey

As you continue to embrace this way of living—caring for your body, mind, and home—remember that you are walking in a calling that is both sacred and beautiful. Every time you choose to nourish your body with wholesome foods, every time you opt for a toxin-free product, and every time you pour love into your home, you are living out the principles of these scriptures. You are creating a legacy of health, faith, and love for your family, and that is something to be celebrated.

Be encouraged, dear sister. You are doing holy work, and God is with you every step of the way. Let these scriptures be a source of strength and inspiration as you continue to care for your family and home, knowing that your efforts are seen, valued, and blessed by the One who made you.
